H.E. Nahida Rahman Shumona

H.E. Nahida Rahman Shumona is a senior and accomplished career diplomat of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh with over two and a half decades of dedicated service in the Foreign Service. Throughout her diplomatic career, she has held a wide range of important assignments at both headquarters and Bangladesh missions abroad, contributing significantly to the advancement of Bangladesh’s bilateral relations, multilateral engagement and consular diplomacy.

Previously, she was High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Brunei Darussalam. Prior to that assignment, she served at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Director General, where she led the Consular & Welfare Wing and the Regional Organisations Wing, overseeing key areas related to citizen services abroad, diaspora welfare and engagement with regional and multilateral organisations.

In her overseas diplomatic career, she has served in several important postings, including as Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of Bangladesh in Brasilia and as Counsellor and Acting High Commissioner at the Bangladesh High Commission in Ottawa. Earlier in her career, she also served in Bangladesh’s missions in Kolkata and Canberra, gaining extensive experience in consular, political and bilateral diplomatic functions.

Ambassador Shumona holds a Master’s degree in Diplomacy and International Trade from Monash University, Australia. She also earned both a Master’s degree and an Honours degree in English Literature from the University of Dhaka. In addition, she was awarded a fellowship in Transboundary Water Law from the University of Geneva, reflecting her academic engagement with issues of international law and shared natural resources governance.

Beyond her official responsibilities, she maintains a deep and continuing interest in social development and humanitarian causes, particularly those involving children and women. She actively supports charitable initiatives for underprivileged children and children with special needs across multiple countries, including Bangladesh, Brazil, Brunei, India and Nepal.

Her broader interests include interfaith dialogue, sustainable living, gender equality, cultural collaboration and environmental awareness. She is an avid reader and nature enthusiast, with a strong appreciation for cultural exchange and inclusive social development.

H.E. Mrs. Shumona is married to Mr. Aslam Iqbal, Additional Secretary (Retired) of the Government of Bangladesh and they are blessed with two sons.
